Web Design
Design ideas: Is background art dead?
Background art and patterns were big in the early days of Web design. Today? Not so much. I suppose the idea lost favor because is made pages so visually dense. This application (for the School of Visual Arts) works for me, it adds to the design's “work-in-progress” feel.

In the early days of webdesign every little effect added to a page (because of the code limitations not every creative idea was possible to achieve) was cool and important. Many gradients, especially patterns (rocks, earth, leafs, sand, etc.) which, as you said, created rich, visually dense pages (which most of the time were only distracting the eyes from the real page content). These days backgrounds are still used but in a more creative way - there is a trend on using delicate floral patterns - or background which are part of the main page design (as seen on Mp3.com or Gamespot.com ads which are extended sometimes also on the page background).
In these days background art is used mostly by nonconformist & trendy websites - fashion / artists / music / communitys (mostly designers communitys).
